Standard 1.1 Shared Vision
Candidates facilitate the development and implementation of a shared vision for the use of technology in teaching, learning, and leadership. (PSC 1.1/ISTE 1a)
Artifact: Shared Vision and Rationale Paper
Reflection:
This artifact is the Shared Vision Paper that I wrote in ITEC 7410. The purpose of this paper was to define a technology vision for my school with the help of a variety of stakeholders. The shared vision shows mastery of Standard 1.1 - Shared Vision - which states that "candidates facilitate the development and implementation of a shared vision for the use of technology in teaching, learning, and leadership." This artifact perfectly exemplifies the standard since the assignment required me to develop a vision and then describe how it would be implemented throughout the school.
The main part of this project was to actually define the technology vision for the school and then rationalize it and explain why it is necessary and how the school will benefit from its implementation. This paper explained in detail my plan for facilitating the development of this vision. I sent out a survey to important stakeholders to get their opinions and advice, and I also used current initiatives going on at my school such as Project Based Learning and STEM to further shape and define the technology vision. In addition, since I work at a Title I school, I knew that including diversity considerations in my vision statement was a necessity.
In addition, I am currently in the process of facilitating the implementation of this shared vision. I described in this paper that I will be forming a vertical technology team at the school to take the lead in implementing this vision and assisting colleagues with implementing this vision as well. This team meets once a month and is in the process of creating a vertical technology plan to be used school-wide. It is the responsibility of the team to communicate this plan with the teachers and assist them in implementing the components of the plan in their classrooms. My school does technology staff development twice a quarter led by myself, my partners, and the members of the vertical technology team. These staff developments will focus on this shared vision and helping teachers plan lessons that effectively integrate technology.
Through writing this shared vision and rationale, I discovered the incredible amount of thought that goes into developing a vision for a school. I took ITEC 7410 during the summer, and as a result, I was unable to collaborate with these teachers/stakeholders as much as I would have liked. Most of our discussion happened via email or Google Forms surveys. If I had been able to create this during the school year, I would have had a lot more face to face interaction with the stakeholders involved in the creation and implementation of this shared vision.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted school improvement, faculty development, and student learning. My school has never had a solid technology vision before, and as a result, the technology use across grade levels has been fairly inconsistent. This shared vision along with the vertical technology team that I have established will give our teachers a direction to go as they begin implementing technology with their students. This impact can be assessed by observing how technology instruction changes now that a shared vision is in place for the school.
