Standard 4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use
Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. (PSC 4.2/ISTE 5b)
Artifact: Copyright Presentation
Reflection:
This artifact is the Copyright Presentation I completed in ITEC 7445. For this presentation, I focused on copyright and fair use policies when using images. Searching, downloading, saving, and utilizing images in presentations and projects is a very common thing that goes on in schools. So many projects require pictures, and students and even teachers usually do not think twice about doing a search for the picture they want and then saving it to use for their project. This artifact shows mastery of Standard 4.2 - Safe, Healthy, Legal, and Ethical Use - which states that "candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies" because it outlines how to correctly use images in a school setting.
During this Copyright Presentation, I demonstrated the ability to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. I specifically focused on pictures. I described in depth the four factors that must be taken into account when determining fair use. I believe that this information would be very valuable to any teacher. Prior to taking ITEC 7445 and creating this presentation, I had never really bothered to look into the guidelines for correctly using images for classroom instruction and/or projects. As a result, this presentation completely changed the way that I now use pictures in my classes. I gave a lot of examples and scenarios to make it easy for anyone to understand, and I do believe the information is pretty straightforward without being overwhelming to teachers.
Completing this presentation showed me that I had been using images wrong, and it gave me the knowledge I needed to change how I used images with my students and in my classroom lessons. This type of information is very good to know since we should be modeling to our students how to appropriately use digital information and technologies. As a result, this artifact improved both faculty development and student learning since both teachers and students will benefit from this information.
