Standard 1.2 Strategic Planning
Candidates facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. (PSC 1.2/ISTE 1b)
Artifact: SWOT Analysis
Action and Evaluation Plan
Reflection:
These artifacts are the SWOT Analysis and the Action and Evaluation Plan that I wrote in ITEC 7410. The SWOT Analysis is a technology planning needs assessment that looks at strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to determine the school's current reality. Then, the action and evaluation plan defines goals that the school can work toward and strategies that will help the teachers reach these goals in the area of technology. These artifacts show mastery of Standard 1.2 - Strategic Planning - which states that "candidates facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans" since these assignments worked hand in hand to ultimately design a technology-infused strategic plan for my school.
First, the SWOT Analysis allowed me to begin the process of facilitating the design and development of a technology-infused strategic plan. An effective plan cannot be created before first conducting a needs assessment and determining the current reality of the school. The SWOT Analysis is divided into categories based on the ISTE Essential Conditions. I determined and analyzed the school's current strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to each essential condition, and as a result, I was able to define where we currently are in comparison with where we need to be. Next, I used the results from the SWOT to write up some goals that the school can work toward. Going along with these goals, I came up with strategies that will allow me to facilitate the implementation of these goals. Each strategy aligns with the goals and specifies who at the school will be responsible for carrying it out.
The communication of this strategic plan is going to be an ongoing process. Lots of the strategies covered in the action plan will be communicated to the staff during the technology staff developments that happen twice per quarter. In addition, I have formed a vertical technology team at our school that consists of grade level representatives. This team will work closely with me to communicate this plan to all of the staff members and assist them as they utilize the strategies stated in the plan to meet each goal.
Finally, the action plan explains how I will facilitate the evaluation of the technology-infused strategic plan. Under each goal listed in the action plan, I included multiple ways to evaluate whether or not the goal has been met. These evaluations will be done in a variety of ways, from administrator walkthroughs to teacher surveys and feedback to student surveys and feedback.
Through completing this artifact, I learned how valuable it is to complete a SWOT before jumping right into formulating an action plan. The SWOT gave me such a solid picture of where my school currently is, and it made determining next steps fairly simple. I wish I could have completed this class during the school year instead of during the summer. Getting in touch with colleagues over the summer can be so difficult since everyone's schedules are so different, but I would have loved to talk about the action plan with my administration and my vertical technology team members more than I did.
The work that went into creating these artifacts is going to impact school improvement, faculty development, and student learning so much since it defines where we are going regarding teacher and student technology use.The professional development listed in the action plan will benefit teachers as they learn how to conduct effective lessons utilizing technology.
