Standard 3.2 Managing Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences. (PSC 3.2/ISTE 3b)
Artifact: Multimedia Design Project/WebQuest
Reflection:
This artifact is the Multimedia Design Project/WebQuest that I completed and implemented in ITEC 7445. Once I finished developing this WebQuest, I partnered with a fourth grade teacher, Wayne, to implement it with his fourth grade reading and writing students. I came in on day one of this implementation and explained the concept of the WebQuest to the students. Then, he and I worked together throughout the rest of the implementation process. This artifact shows mastery of Standard 3.2 - Managing Digital Tools and Resources - which states that "candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences" because we had to manage the digital tools and resources that were needed in order for the students to complete this project smoothly and successfully.
Throughout this WebQuest, Wayne and I had to manage the digital tools and resources that the students needed for this learning experience. This experience required students to work in groups of two or three. As a result, it was not necessary to have one to one devices. Wayne had seven chromebooks and four laptops in his classroom, and he also had six or seven students who brought their own device to school every day. As a rule, we would usually tell each group which device(s) they would be using while completing that day's part of the activity so the room did not turn into chaos with the entire class rushing to get a device. Wayne had a charging station set up in his room that stored all of his technology. As a result, students knew where to get the technology they needed and where to return everything when they were finished.
To me, having a plan is the biggest key to managing digital tools and resources. It should never be a free for all with students fighting over devices. If I were to implement this WebQuest into my technology specials class, device management would be easier since I have access to thirty laptops. I would have students work in groups of three, so I would let them utilize one or two devices per group. I value collaboration, and as a result, I do not believe that it is always necessary for each student to be using a device all by himself/herself.
Through completing this artifact, I was able to collaborate with a teacher on how to best manage the digital tools required for students to complete the project. It was amazing how smoothly it went, and students got a lot out of the learning experience. The classroom was always buzzing with learning, but it never became chaotic due to any device confusion.
