Artifact: Online Learning Experience
Summary of Online Learning Experience
Reflection:
This artifact is the Online Learning Experience that I completed in ITEC 7481. Through this assignment, I designed an online course to be completed by 4th grade social studies students. I used Gwinnett County's eCLASS platform as my LMS, and I designed six modules that will be completed in about twelve weeks. This unit covers the majority of the social studies standards that 4th grade students need to master before moving on to 5th grade. This artifact shows mastery of Standard 3.3 - Online & Blended Learning - which states that "candidates develop, model, and facilitate the use of online and blended learning, digital content, and learning networks to support and extend student learning and expand opportunities and choices for professional learning for teachers and administrators" because I used a combination of online and blended learning components to create a social studies course for 4th grade students.
Through creating this Online Learning Experience, I demonstrated the ability to develop, model, and facilitate online and blended learning, digital content, and learning networks. As I designed this course, I planned for some synchronous activities such as Google Hangouts, Skype sessions, or face to face meetings. Then, I designed asynchronous activities that took place in each module of the course. These types of activities included filling out handouts via Google Docs, researching the content via videos or websites, posting to discussion forums, reflecting on learning via Kidblog, and creating a final product using a variety of Web 2.0 tools. I designed this course in such a way so that the students taking the course would already be familiar with the majority of the digital content that I utilized. However, I also included instructional videos and/or handouts in my LMS in case anyone needed a refresher on how to use any of the tools. Finally, as I developed this learning opportunity, I designed it with student collaboration in mind. The culminating project at the end is a group project, and there are also multiple opportunities throughout each module for students to collaborate such as responding to discussion posts and blog posts. When I designed the LMS, I made sure that it was easy for students to navigate by using lots of visuals, and I made sure that each module was designed in such a way that it would meet the needs of all learners.
Through creating this learning experience, I learned a lot about what it takes to design an online course. There truly is a lot of work that goes in to making sure that it's successful. Online courses are so different from face to face courses, and there are so many additional things to think about and prepare for. I also was able to apply the principles of universal design as I created this online course, and that was very beneficial to me. The work that went into creating this artifact will impact student learning because of the ways that I designed each module. Students will be able to effectively learn the content covered in each module through a variety of means including videos and websites, and they will also be required to take control over their learning by taking notes via Google Docs. They will also learn digital citizenship skills and collaboration skills because of all the communication and teamwork that is required in this course.
