I learned so many valuable things throughout this course. First, I learned the importance of a strong data team at a school. Data teams have the capabilities of effecting change within a school for the benefit of the students. In addition, I learned the importance of using data correctly and appropriately. Using just one piece of data to make decisions is unacceptable because it is not presenting a full picture of what is going on at that specific school. Finally, this class taught me so many Excel skills that I have previously not really had a chance to use or practice. Excel truly is a great program to utilize when wanting to display data to a data team or an entire school.
For me, the Elevator Speech was the most valuable field experience that I completed in this course. Encouraging and motivating others is very important to me, and that is what one of the purposes of the Elevator Speech was. Teachers have so much on their plates, and sometimes, it is very hard to convince them to join or support another school initiative. They need to be motivated and inspired to join it. They need to believe that the school initiative will benefit their students, and that is what the Elevator Speech helped me do. It really helped me practice motivating teachers.
I plan on continuing this learning at my school by remaining very data conscious. I will apply what I have learned by using data appropriately and making data-informed decisions. I will also be able to apply the Using Data Process as our school goes over various pieces of data that we receive.
One challenge that I anticipate as I implement these changes would be teacher hesitance. Collecting data is a lot of work, and as a previous classroom teacher, I can say from experience that collecting data was definitely not one of my favorite things to do. As a result, it is important to emphasize the importance of data to teachers. In addition, it would be an extra bonus to come up with ways to assist teachers in the collection of data. That way, they would not feel extra stressed out.
All in all, this class benefited me greatly since collecting data has become so important in the school system. I am looking forward to applying the strategies I learned in this class at my school.
